Kuldhara & Bhangarh
“An abandoned Paliwal Brahmin village and a 16th-century fort, each wrapped in India's best-known curse legends.”
A place with a memory.
Kuldhara, situated 18 km southwest of Jaisalmer, was once a thriving settlement of wealthy Paliwal Brahmins who had pioneered ingenious arid-zone agriculture. Around 1825 CE, the entire village and 84 surrounding hamlets abandoned their homes overnight to protect their honour and escape the tyrannical extortion of the prime minister Salim Singh.
